The "urban" economy plays an increasingly vital role in India's economic development. This workshop/conference seeks to address many critical questions relating to the effective and equitable functioning of the economy of Indian towns, cities and metros. We expect to analyze real estate markets, agglomeration economies, new modes of urbanization and structural problems of urban governance. Discussions will focus on ways to help promote sound policies for a developed urban infrastructure, growth in job creation, increased access to affordable housing, developing transparent mechanisms of governance, generating new sources of urban finance, and constructing viable social welfare systems for the urban poor.
While the focus of this third Berkeley conference on Indian cities is on economic issues, we encourage speakers and participants to address, if they so desire, the sorts of social and political issues that need to be considered as we seek to make Indian towns, cities and metros vibrant, both in the economic, as well as social spheres.
